哥实行贸易开放政策，与美国、中国、墨西哥、智利、秘鲁、中美洲五国、多米尼加、新加坡、欧盟等签有自由贸易协定，与世界50多个国家（地区）有贸易关系。对外贸易在国民经济中占重要地位。主要出口电子芯片、集成电路、纺织品、香蕉、菠萝、咖啡、医疗器械、加工食品、机械和电子配件等，主要出口对象国为美国、中国、欧盟和中美洲邻国；主要进口原材料、消费品、燃料、润滑油和资本货物，主要进口来源国为美国、欧盟、委内瑞拉和墨西哥。2012年哥出口112.98亿美元，进口130.30亿美元，同比分别增8.9%和－19.6%。[5]
吸收外资
自20世纪九十年代以来，流入哥斯达黎加的外国直接投资稳步增长，主要集中在服务业（40%）、制造业（26%）、房地产业（19%）和商业（7%）。在隔离大利嘉的跨国企业超过250家。1997年，美国英特尔公司在哥斯达黎加投资设立电脑芯片和服务器组装厂，称为最大的外资企业，迄今累计投资超过9亿美元。2014年4月，英特尔公司宣布调整在哥斯达黎加业务，裁员1500人，将制造装配业务迁至亚洲。
据联合国贸发会议发布的2014年《世界投资报告》显示，2013年，哥斯达黎加吸收外资流量为26.5亿美元；截止2013年底，哥斯达黎加吸收外资存量为217.9亿美元。[5]
